Prevent Hand Calluses When Working Out

Unfortunately, hand calluses are virtually inevitable. Calluses are the result of friction, so as long as you’re using your hands, there’s a good chance you’ll get at least one callus in your lifetime. While there are lots of activities that can cause this particular type of friction, the most common causes of calluses are manual labor, and working out.

If you’re tired of seeing those unsightly hand calluses, you’re not at a total loss. There are a few things you can do to prevent them. And at the very least, you can remove them if preventing them is out of the question.

Below are our best tips for preventing hand calluses.

Watch Your Grip

Whether you’re banging a hammer all day, or lift weights at the gym regularly your grip is a huge factor in whether or not calluses will form. As we mentioned before, hand calluses are caused by friction. Try placing objects where your fingers meet your palms and then wrapping your hand around them. Less skin will get pinched with this grip than when you grip objects with the middle of your palm.

Wear Gloves

Gloves are a great way to minimize the formation of calluses. The glove will act as a barrier between your hand and whatever object you’re holding, be it a dumbbell or a rake. Just remember to wash your gloves regularly. Your hands sweat too!

Moisturize

Friction between our palm and an object occurs when our hand cannot easily glide or rotate around the object. Keeping your hands moisturized at all times will help them to move more easily and prevent the formation of hand calluses.

If you already have calluses on your hands there are easy ways to get rid of them. After a shower when your skin has been softened by the warm water, gently rub a pumice stone against your palms to smooth your calluses down. Follow this up with some lotion! Or you could also try callus removing gels and creams.

Don’t hide your hands because you’re ashamed of your calluses, just use these tips to keep your hands looking soft and smooth!
